GeekFest 08

January 14th, 2010

By Camus

Hi great readers Camus here just to report what happened in GeekFest the 8 and 9 of November 2008. Well first of all sorry for the late report but I had a lot of school work plus other things but here it is my experience on Geekfest. Geekfest is another option in Mexicali for anime, games, and the art fans out there. The Con had a bunch of different areas: gaming, concert stage, main stage, vendors area, and the workshops. I hardly had a moment to walk around the convention do that I had stuff to do but I will tell you guys what I experience.

The first day I had fun I was able to be the announcer for most of the Con. I’m going to talk about the different areas. The gaming area had game systems ranging from super nintendo all the way up to new generation systems. I saw a good bunch of people playing in this area most playing Gears of War and KOF. The Concert area was away from the main areas but it had a good amount of bands around 20 of them. Some of the good bands where The Depreciation Guild (New York), Bam Bam (Nuevo Leon, Mex), Rubber Monsters and Desert Lullaby (Mexicali, Mex). I only got to hear Depreciation Guilt and I thought that they were really good. The main stage was outside the building it was a good place but for Sunday all the activities planned for that day had to be done inside in a smaller area this was not the organizers fault because it was because of mother nature, it just got to windy. The vendors area was outside the first day and a lot of people didn’t know that they were there the good thing was that on Sunday it went inside do to the wind. There were some good stores there like my friends from Item Shop that were the ones sponsoring the Coplay express. There were a good amount of workshops scattered around the Con. The different workshops included drawing, clay sculpture and music. Also the paintings area I personally have no idea what it had to do with the event most all the paintings were of paintings that had nothing to do with gaming, anime, or music. There were some art works that were separated from that area that like the drawings that a young artist from Mexicali had in the style of a comic book art.One of the bad things was that Woofan and Consplayers were upstairs away from most of the stuff.

The Cosplay show with about 20 contestants and me as an announcer turned out to be a really funny and fun event. Also I got to kick the Joker (Efrain) on the floor as part of his show. The winner was a guy dressed as Wolfwood (Trigun). Also the Cosplay Express contest wish was a contest of who could make the best costume in an hour with only tape and China paper. The best costume for this event was a Goku (DBZ). I personally think that one of the best things was that Li got to hit a piñata to celebrate her birthday.

I would like to thank the staff of geeks (friends) of this event. All the good people who gave me a hand. And WOOFAN.net for sponsoring CONSPLAYERS to attend this event. The Highs: cosplayers, the kids, the gaming area, Li’s piñata

The Lows: concert area hidden, woofan and consplayers hidden, the vendors area on Saturday
